Gay bars in Japan are difficult for foreigners since bartenders of most bars speaks Japanese only and not used to talk to foreigners. It's an entirely different story if you are accompanied by Japanese friends or you speak even a little Japanese. Otherwise the number of bars in Tokyo where bartenders can speak English is limited.

Across the street from Takashimaya Dept Store, tucked away in the wonderful shopping arcade paralleling Shijo Dori. Not a gay sauna, but a proper bath frequented by middle aged and mature gay men. They will approach if they like you, but only furtive action takes place here.

Tennoji, in the area around Tsutenkaku Tower, is the original post-war gay neighborhood. Mostly older Japanese men go to Tennoji these days.

Located very near the entrance of Doyama-cho gay area. Confusingly there is a another bar named Kuro with a green sign nearby, but you will be very unwelcome if you go to the wrong one, so look for Kuro's BLUE sign on the inner right-hand side of a small hallway off the main street. Since the sign is in Japanese, the easiest thing to do is to call the bar and have someone meet you in front of Explosion.The oldest gay bar in Osaka frequented by middle-aged and mature gay men (30s - 70s). Warm, amiable, and cozy. English spoken.

" There is however a great sauna (which is not Japanese only) near Umeda station. I'm sorry I didn't get the address for you but there is a whole street of gay bars there so it shouldn't be hard to find if you just ask in one of the bars. As Japan is an aging society it is reflected in that sauna where about 60% are over 50. If you want to see a lot of ruggedly handsome older men, Japan is the place to go. It was incredible. Sure would like to go back there though. Even in the gay bars it was all old men in their 60's-80's. I was in heaven."

In Tokyo, bars patronised by older gay men are typically situated in separate areas such as Ueno and Asakusa and are notably ‘less sophisticated’ and ‘more familiar’ than Shinjuku 2-Chome. While the number of bars in Shinjuku 2-Chome is said to be the greatest for any designated gay area in the world, if one were to take the floor space of each bar into account, it may not be that large.

Report 02/03: A great place to meet a Japanese daddy. I was there for an afternoon, and met lots of sexy daddys. The only problem is most of them only speak Japanese. Remember to take off your shoes right after you get in the door. The tea place is located in the second floor. There is a Bar in the third floor where you can get some noodle soup. Have fun! Most activities happen in the bath and sauna area. HOT!

Located on the west-side of Ikebukuro station, this sauna has the atmosphere of a well-kept business hotel. There is a large refreshment/television room, private rooms, and several small rooms in blue light with numerous futons. In the basement is a very large porno viewing room. The shower and sauna are really quite nice. Follow directions to 30-19 Ikebukuro ni-chome. As you get closer there will be signs in English directing you to Jinya. Older crowd. ¥2,200 for a locker.
