About the Guide

How did it start?
The GrayGay Guide started in 1996 as a result of a visit to Barcelona which I enjoyed so much I posted information about the trip to the Silverfox Mailing List (see Mailing Lists page).

This generated email traffic from around the globe regarding other GrayGay places to visit, including a list from the late Ray Orpino. Much of the information I received was not available in any guide book and so I decided to use my web space for the GrayGay Guide site, which now includes information on 52 countries and over 2000 venues. In 2000 this was redesigned and expanded into GrayGay.com - a one-stop resource for mature gay men and their admirers.

It now includes the latest news headlines, extensive links and resources in the Links section, Reviews and advice for online dating, gay retirement and care facilites worldwide as well as an extensive travel advice section.

Grayding Scheme
Many of the printed guide books or web guides give very little information about the type of venue you are visiting. Thus I developed the GrayGay Guide "Grayding Scheme" which is designed to give you a qualitative measure of the nature of an establishment before you visit. However please remember that places can change and vary from day to day, so this information is intended as a guide only.

Gray: % of clients aged 50+ 
Admirer: % of clients aged 18-50 who like older men
Rent/Hustlers: % of clients who may require payment for sex
Music Level: 1-10 where 1 is low background music, 5 is loud background, 10 requires shouting to make yourself heard.
Cruise Factor: 1-10 where 1 is a place you go to meet friends, 5 is a place you might occasionally meet strangers, 10 is a place where everyone wants anonymous sex. 
Elegance Factor:1-10 where 1 is somewhere you dress down to go to, 5 is a place where clean casual clothing is worn, 10 is somewhere you wouldn't be overdressed in a Tuxedo
Smoke Level:1-10 where 0 is non-smoking, 1 is somewhere you can breath easily, 5 is a place where there are smoking areas but you can keep clear, 10 is somewhere you need a gas mask to get in the door.

Grayde Awards
There are a few places around the world which offer something exceptional for mature gay men and their admirers and the Grayde Awards recognises those that stand out. If you know of somewhere that should be listed please email me.

Adult Material
While the GrayGay Guide deals with adult themes and contains links to sites that have adult material, there is no adult material on the site and it is the current policy of the to keep it this way. Posting to the bulletin board and chat rooms that contain such material will be removed. Full information about our policies can be found here.

About the Editor
The editor of the Gray Gay Guide is a tall, young(ish), Englishmen living in London who has always loved mature men and travels extensively for business and pleasure. He became frustrated at not being able to find the "right" place to go to from the published guides - hence the development of the GrayGay Guide.
