Not necessarily the only, but certainly the most recognized of gay
clubs on Hawaii's Big Island. This small cafe-style bar pulls in a
big crowd on the weekend. The mixed crowd of men and women, young
and old is a diverse one, drawing in people from surrounding communities
and even a handful of tourists now and again. DJs spin wax in a booth
that's small compared to what you'll find in Honolulu. Just the same,
the vibe is good, the people are friendly and the drinks are affordable.

Comments: If you are looking for a typical bar, Angles is a good one.
It is on the second floor of a decent (actually rather good by Honolulu
standards) restaurant named the Seaside Cafe. There is a balcony to
escape smoke and loud music. There are two bars, although the smaller
one seems to be for women. While it is obvious that Angles is a gay
bar, Honolulu doesn’’t seem to pay much attention to that distinction.
I spent many days in the bar since it was next door to our condo.
I talked with many older gents, but played pool with many younger
guys. I also noticed quite a few seemingly straight couples having
a drink on the balcony. Angles is located next door to Fusion (2260Kuhio
Ave) which is more of a dance club. As I said, we went there many
evenings for a drink to either end our day of sunning and touring
or as a whistle stop before going to dinner. Like Hula’’s below, Angles
sponsors a Gay Catamaran Sail. To join in, meet at Angles at 11:45
on Sunday.

Comments: Hula’’s is by far my favorite place to wet my whistle in
Waikiki. The bar is located close to Queen’’s Surf Beach which is
the local gay beach section. The bar actually faces Sunset Beach where
the city puts on a nice beach show on Saturday and Sunday evenings
(see above). The bar’’s outer wall is open to the outside and you
get a great view of both the sunset on the water and a nice view of
Diamond Head as the sun’’s last rays strike the side of the old volcano.
The drink prices are very reasonable and the bar is very well stocked.
You can imagine the joy I had watching some nice talent walk along
the beach, drinking a cold local beer and enjoying the nice tropical
breezes. On Sundays, Hula’’s sponsors a Gay Catamaran Sail. To go
on the cruise, meet at Hula’’s at 2:30 and buy a ticket from the bar
tender.

This dark and casual smoke filled karaoke lounge on the edge of Waikiki
caters primarily to a gay crowd. An even blend of locals and tourists
gather regularly for billiards, darts, and socializing. Weekends are
a magnet for a grown- up, slower paced group of professionals, in
for evenings of cocktails and mutual war stories of another workweek
past.

Beaches:
Queen’s Surf Beach
Queen’s Surf is named for a nice surfing break that once existed
at the southern edge of Waikiki. The break was destroyed when the
city expanded Kapiolani Park and now it is just a bathing beach. It
is the "official" gay beach of Waikiki. The beach is a little rocky,
but I enjoyed swimming there. The park has recently been renovated
with a new building located right on the beach that houses a changing
room, fresh water showers and a snack bar. The gay beach is located
after the last jetty on the southern most stretch of Waikiki beach.
It is across from the Honolulu Zoo. While it is a nice walk from the
main beach, it is not too far to make the trek odious.
Lighthouse Beach
Diamond Head.
There is an unofficial nude beach located at the base of the Diamond
Head Light house. The beach is located just off Diamond Head Road,
just below and to the left (east) of the lighthouse. There is ample
parking on the road. I parked at the top of the hill and walked down
a nice, paved walk path to the beach. There was a group of windsurfers
at the bottom of the walk path. I turned west and walked about 100
yds and found a nude bather. I walked another quarter of a mile and
found the end of the nude beach. This is an old lava flow and the
beach is not the greatest for swimming. However, you do get to work
on the all-over tan.
