By: Spencer Cox and
Bruce Kellerhouse, PH.D, Gay City News, New York, 15 March, 2007

and, to some, perplexing.
Retired
officers burst from the closet
The Advocate Monday
19 March 2007
Seven retired military officers publicly
came out of the closet on Friday, hoping their actions will stir Congress
to repeal "don't ask, don't tell" and force General Peter Pace, chairman
of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to apologize for calling gays "immoral"
last week. The officers are all highly decorated and have earned numerous
honors and commendations.
Can't
marry your partner? US gays adopt instead.
Associated Press, Thursday
15 March, 2007
Linc Morris admits it took him a while
to get used to the idea of being adopted -- which probably explains
why he was 42 years old by the time it happened...
Senior
housing for gray gays becomes smart business
By Jesse Harlan Alderman
Less than three years ago, Fred Hodges,
54, and his partner of 30 years, John Kuen, lived in the heart of
red-state America--Cobb County, Ga., the Bible-belt area that was
once home to the Gingrich Revolution. In fact, Newt Gingrich, the
former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, lived in the
same neighborhood. But the couple found being gay in Gingrich country
a drag. Now approaching retirement, they didn’t want to spend their
golden years traveling 25 miles to downtown Atlanta for a taste of
gay life. So, instead, they shipped off to a unique retirement community--one
designed and built for homosexual seniors.
Gays
pessimistic about finding love online
6th March 2007, PinkNews.co.uk
The internet is now officially the
most popular way for gay men and women to find a date (in the UK).
Research has shown that 87% of gay men and 58% of lesbians have used
the internet to find a prospective partner in the past 12 months.
But over the same period only 18% of men and 27% of women have had
a serious relationship, suggesting that finding the right partner
is like finding a needle in a haystack.
HIV/AIDS
and Older Adults
by Mike Sugnet, CAMP,
Kansas City, February 17, 2007
People over 50 represent between 13%
and 17% of the AIDS cases in the United States and in the last decade
the incidence of AIDS has risen more than twice as fast in those over
50 than among younger adults..The problem is that health care and
service providers tend to downplay the fact that seniors do have sex
and do drugs and are at risk just like the general population. Safe
sex practice is just as important for the senior.
Atlanta
group wants to hear from gay ‘elders’
By Zack Hudson, Sothern
Voice, Friday, February 23, 2007
A consortium of community groups will
ask their clients to help predict what will improve the lives of gay
men and lesbians 55 and over at an upcoming community forum. The organizers
— which include numerous gay organizations — are capitalizing on a
four-year grant administered by the Atlanta Regional Commission to
consider the well being of Atlanta’s aging Baby Boomer generation
of gay men and lesbians. The group is assembling an action plan, which
it will share with government agencies, social organizations and service
providers with the mission of yielding increased access and better
service for gay men and lesbian senior citizens.

Seeking
Bay Area LGBT seniors
by Heather Cassell,
Bay Area Reporter, Published 02/01/2007
Have you seen LGBT seniors in your
neighborhood? Lavender Seniors of the East Bay's and New Leaf: Services
for Our Community's Friendly Visitors programs are looking for them.
In a stroke of good fortune, both agencies have a surplus of volunteers
who want to spend time with LGBT people in their 70s, 80s, and 90s,
but not enough seniors. The program provides volunteer assistance
for LGBT seniors to have someone spend time with them and even sometimes
help with small tasks, such as shopping.
Gay
retirees need protection from discrimination
Deb Price , Detroit
News, Monday, February 12, 2007
Three years ago, Ellen Novak developed
a chronic lung condition that forced her to retire at just 52 after
25 years of working for the New Mexico state government. Unlike spousal
benefits, partner benefits didn't follow Ellen into retirement. Hurting
financially because of Ellen's retirement, the family had to come
up with $225 a month to buy Linda catastrophic insurance. Rather than
suffer in silence, the lesbians, openly gay since their early 20s,
demanded fairness. Their claim is before a court. And New Mexico state
lawmakers are weighing legislation to make sure retirees don't lose
partner benefits.
Housing
caters to 'gay and gray'
Dallas Morning News,
Sunday, January 07, 2007
Santa Fe: Jan Gaynor and Barbara Cohn
have decided to spend their retirement years in this city of art and
culture, not just because it's steeped in 400 years of history but
also because it offers something new. The sixtysomething couple wanted
to live in the nation's first full-fledged retirement community for
gays and lesbians. They sold their house in California and moved into
a condominium at Rainbow Vision Santa Fe this summer. "We've been
together for 16 years, and we were looking to retire someplace where
we could be ourselves," Cohn said. "Here, we can hold hands and give
each other a kiss without someone raising an eyebrow."

Gay Wired Thu, 01 Mar

When people see the words “sex” and
“love,” they rarely think of someone age 50 or over. However, the
National Center on Longevity says that 39% of older people are interested
in—and want to have more of—sex. “Just because we get older our desire
for intimacy doesn’t disappear,” says gerontology expert and author
Nieli Langer. Her book, "Love & Sex: Are We Ever Too Old?"

Independent
Living Community Opening for San Francisco Bay Area
Tue, 27 Feb 2007 17:35:00
GMT | Author : Barbary Lane Senior Communities
One of the first urban independent-living
communities in the USA for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender
(LGBT) seniors will open in Oakland, CA with leasing beginning March
1, 2007. The needs of LGBT seniors are presently invisible and largely
unaddressed in the senior housing industry due to lack of awareness,
discrimination and homophobia. LGBT elders often feel they must go
back into the closet if they move into traditional retirement, independent
or assisted living. Presently there are over 3 million LGBT Americans
over the age of 65, and by 2030 that number will nearly double.
