Loafers
26 Douglas St.
Tel (021) 432 3550
A small, even homely pub just across the river from the city centre.
It tends to attract an older crowd, but not exclusively so. Don’t
let the gaudy purple exterior put you off: it’s actually quite cosy
inside, similar to many traditional Irish pubs, although the toilets
are technically outdoors (much to the delight of a Californian tourist
we once met). Thursday is women’s night in the back bar.
The Other Place
Augustine St. (off South Main St.)
Tel (021) 427 8470
This club is part of a complex which also features a resource centre,
bookshop and café. The club runs on Friday (a bit lame) and Saturday
(generally better) from 7pm-2am, and tends to attract a mostly male
crowd. Split into two levels, there’s a bar upstairs and a dancefloor
down below, where the sounds are strictly chart-based. Many of the
younger set shun The Other Place giving the club a curiously high
age profile. It’s definitely not the most glamorous of spots, and
can feel quite seedy. On the plus side, the staff are very friendly
and ’tis a grand spot for a night out with a gang of friends. There’s
a membership policy in place; non-members have to pay a couple of
euros extra to get in.

The George
89 South Great George's Street
Dublin 2.
Tel: 01-478 29 83
The George now has two entrances, the large one is for the club and
the Gray percentage is close to nil, the small one on the right side
leads to the small pub with the older crowd. You can get from one
to the other by going up the stairs at the back or going back to the
street. The small pub now is only on the street level, the upstairs
floor is only for the club.

The Boilerhouse
12, Crane Lane (off Dame Street next to "The Oak" pub)
Dublin 2
Tel. 677 3130
Mon to Thu 1pm to 5am, open all weekend from Fri 1pm to Monday 5am.
Comment: The place is very close to where the Gym used to be and there
is even a sign at the old Gym location to direct to the Boilerhouse.
I was there on Saturday afternoon and the Gray factor was 50% or even
more. Cruise factor verrrrry high!
The Boilerhouse is owned by the same people who run The George (see
bars). It has a cafe and changing rooms on the ground floor, then
goes up a further 4 floors with a sauna, steam room, video room and
many private cabins. Free condoms and lube.
I can second the cruise factor (on a Monday evening) but the Gray
factor was less - though still "interesting" - Pewit.
